Back from the Big Island

30 03 2009

We recently returned from a 5 day all-expenses-paid trip to the Big Island of Hawaii. My wife earned the trip through her Stampin’ Up! creative rubber stamping business. (Thanks, Hon!)  First time  I’ve been there, and my wife was only 7 years old last time she was there…so, essentially a first for her as well. Came home with a lot of good memories, and a few good photos.  Click the video above for a few minutes of Big Island mojo…

Went on a whale watching tour with our new friend, Tamara. Captain Craig and first mate, Keno, billed it as “extreme” whale watching, and we found out exactly what that meant on the way back to shore.  Got totally soaked!  (Note to self: TAKE the trash bag raincoat the next time it’s offered!) But we saw whales, so who could complain about a little drenching?   Whales were breaching all around.  This one was close enough that I could get her with the 70-200mm.  Five frames per second sure helps in this situation!

We were greeted by a couple green sea turtles (Honu, in Hawaiian) on the black sand beach at Punalu’u:

Stampin’ Up put on a luau on our last night there.  What a celebration!  The wind picked up and it threatened to storm, so we left before the end, and unfortunately missed the polynesian fire dancers–dang!  But got a few shots of these Hawaiian warriors:

And it ain’t Starbucks, but it sure is good stuff!  100% Kona coffee: the best in the world:

I’ve posted more images from the trip here.

Mahalo for dropping by!  Feel free to leave a comment if you’re so inclined.  Aloha!

Been a little while since I’ve posted.  Thought it was about time.

This is “spirit week” at my son’s school. Today was “decades of the 1900’s” day, so Conner and a few of his friends dressed as greasers.  Before he got the goo out of his hair, I grabbed a couple portraits.
